Torsten Shaw
I'm project leader for Making Waves.
I set up a small project called SUMS (service users monitoring services) in 2000. This was to use the UFM (User Focused Monitoring) model of service evaluation to carry out evaluations of services run by our local trust. Funding ended in 2002 and we were faced with deciding whether to try and continue the project or let it fold. We decided to try and make a go of it and Making Waves was formed in January 2003. We have expanded our interests and deliver training and work in research teams as well.
Not long after setting up Making Waves I started working for the Open Up project and have done on and off ever since (funding has not been continuous). I support a number of small projects in the region, oversee the Open Up initiatives and provide mentoring for people starting up projects (see our Open Up page).
I have worked in the past for a number of small community mental health projects and have also worked in learning disability services. In 2005 I spent a year working part time at East Midlands NIMHE (QUANGO's, nepotism and pissing away money are all things that come to mind) a useful ‘learning experience'. I have worked in residential and day services and 3rd sector and statutory projects.
I have both struggled with my own mental well being and supported people close to me in their struggles.
My hobbies are sleeping, swearing and ranting.
